I’ve spent the last ten years recording, mixing, and mastering music — and in that time, I’ve heard just about every challenge ambient artists run into. Is this course for beginners?
Yes! I cover everything with beginners in mind - there’s a lot that the course covers, so it might take you a few goes through to really absorb everything, but I include reference guides and cheat sheets for everything so you can refer to those if you get stuck. And the Q&A and feedback bonuses are there to help you as you improve!
Do I need to buy any equipment or plugins to be able to make the most of the course?
Nope! Although I do mention some premium plugins in the course, I always include recommendations for free ones that do the same job. You don’t even need an audio interface - if your computer has an internal sound card, you’re set. All you really need is some way to hear what you’re doing, whether it be headphones or speakers.
Can I do this on headphones?
Yes! You can do what I teach in this course whether you’re on speakers or headphones - I cover both. It’s definitely easier to mix on speakers (and I cover why in the course), but there are plenty of successful musicians and engineers who mix exclusively on headphones.
Do I need to set up acoustic treatment to get the most out of this course?
No, but it definitely helps! In the course, I explain why it’s useful to have, and include suggestions for budget treatment setups, but it’s certainly not crucial to get a good mix - the most important equipment you can invest in is your ears and your brain!
Does this course cover mastering as well?
Not specifically - I do cover it briefly, but not in the same in-depth way I do with mixing. The processes and mindset for mastering are quite different from mixing, and I want you to stay focused on getting the best out of your mix that you can!
Who is this course not for?
If you’re already confidently mixing and mastering ambient music, you probably don’t need this. But if you’ve ever felt unsure about your mix balance or overwhelmed by too many plugins, you’ll love this course!
